Cleaning is an essential part to prolonging the look, feel and life of your Leather. Over time, soils and oils can wear and break down the protective surface coatings. To avoid this, it is important to correctly care for your leather to remove these soils and maintain the ambient moisture balance.
Quality leather furniture is not cheap and requires a trained specialist to clean and protect the hide. With many types of leather on the market, it is imperative that a cleaning operative can inspect and determine which type of leather you have so that the correct cleaning solution and method are used to safely and effectively clean it! Without specialist training, there is a high risk that permanent damage can be caused to your valuable furnishing!

Which type of leather do you have?
Assessing which ‘type’ of leather you have for the correct clean.
Before cleaning leather it is imperative to identify the ‘type’ of leather you have, so that the correct cleaning products and process can be used!
This ensures that no damage occurs during the leather cleaning process which is ever more so important for ‘Aniline style’ leathers where the surface has little or no protection.

What is Aniline Leather?
Aniline is the most natural of leather and is sometimes referred to as naked, unprotected or crust leather. It is usually produced from ‘Full Grain’, referred to as the best quality because the top surface has not been corrected or altered in any way. Natural markings from the animal may still occur which can include scars, insect bites, brand or burn marks.
How to tell if I have an Aniline style Leather?
Check these 4 simple steps:
- Appearance – is the colour even/uneven? Is there a regular grain pattern? Aniline will have an uneven appearance and a non-even grain pattern.
- Touch – does your leather feel soft and warm to touch?
Aniline will feel soft and warm. - Scratch – (in an inconspicuous area) lightly run your finger nail over the surface. Aniline will mark easily.
- Moisture – (in an inconspicuous area) put a drop of water on the surface to see if it soaks into the leather and leaves a dark mark. (Don’t worry, the mark will dry out!). If it absorbs, it is an Aniline style leather.
Cleaning and Caring for Aniline Leather
Aniline is appreciated for its natural look and because it offers a soft, warm sensation to touch. To keep it looking and feeling its best, it is imperative that Aniline is regularly maintained and protected as the leather has little or no protective coating on the surface. Failure to maintain and protect Aniline will cause it to mark or stain very easily!
CROSS Specialist Cleaning use specialist Aniline cleaning products to safely and effectively clean the leather.
Dry Aniline – Aniline leather can sometimes look and feel dry to the touch. We can remedy this by re-hydrating the leather to restore the soft natural feel.
Faded Aniline – Aniline leathers will fade over time, especially if exposed to UV rays. This is not damage, so, we can normally restore the leather using a dyeing process.
Greasy areas on Aniline – Aniline style leathers only have light surface protection, so, heavy wear areas e.g. the headrest and arms, often suffer from a build-up of body oils which gradually soak into the leather causing a dark patch. This requires a de-greasing and restoration process, not cleaning.
